Gothenburg avoids landfill in major new terminal

GOTHENBURG: April 25, 2017. In its largest expansion project since the 1970s, the Port of Gothenburg is to build a 220,000 sq. mt. terminal at the outer port area of Hisingen using clay spoils regularly dredged from the Göta Älv river. Constructed at an estimated cost of SEK1 billion, the new facility will be available "at some point" after 2020, said the port.

Oil rig accomodation platformWith a maximum draught of 12 meters, the terminal is expected to handle intra-European freight transport – either as a final destination or to transshipment hubs in northern Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

"The new terminal will strengthen Gothenburg as the logistics capital of the Nordic region. [It] is an important part of our future expansion and will present us with an opportunity to handle the increase in demand for sea transport," said CEO Magnus Kårestedt.

Kårestedt said no decision has been made on what type of traffic the new terminal will handle – whether it will be containers, RoRo or a combination. The port has noted an increasing political desire throughout Europe to switch traffic from road to sea or inland waterway in order to reduce CO2 emissions.

Who will operate the terminal also remains unknown: "Exactly who it will be has not yet been decided although we already know that there is considerable interest in operating a terminal at the largest port in the Nordic region," Kårestedt added.

Meanwhile in June this year the port's RoRo terminal will load a 3,000 tonnes eight-floor accommodation module (right) on to a barge for transport to an oil rig in the North Sea.

Built close to the quayside over the past two years, the 48 meter high, 33 meter long unit will be moved by self-propelled modular transport to the barge where it will towed to the Martin Linge oilfield, approximately half way between Bergen, Norway and the UK Shetland Islands.
