Turkish Airlines signs airport transfer deal

ISTANBUL: December 14, 2017. Turkish Airlines has signed a consulting contract with Munich Airport International (MIA) to help facilitate the transfer of the airline to the Istanbul New Airport, scheduled to open on October 29, 2018 as the country celebrates its annual Republic Day.

THY and MIA MunichThe airline has reported another month of growth with a 26.9 percent increase in freight and mail traffic for November year-on-year to reach 103,464 tons flown.

For the first 11 months of 2017, air cargo volumes (freight and mail) rose 26.3 percent compared to the same period last year to reach a record 1,020,072 tons.

Istanbul New Airport, being built 35 kilometers north of the city on the coast of the Black Sea at an estimated cost of €10.3 billion, will complete the first of four construction phases next year with the opening of two runways and a terminal for 90 million passengers.

Turkish Airlines currently operates 75 percent of all international flights at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport and MIA will provide operational readiness and transfer (ORAT) support for the national carrier's move to the new airport.

"We are very pleased to support the largest ORAT project in aviation history with our meanwhile 25-years of expertise from more than 30 projects," declared MIA managing director Ralf Gaffal. "Our sincere thanks goes to Turkish Airlines for the trust they have placed in us. We are very proud to be a partner of such a successful, award-winning and ambitious airline," he added.

With 170 aircraft on order, Turkish Airlines currently flies to 300 destinations in 120 countries and recently announced plans to expand its fleet to 500 airplanes by 2023.
