Chinas amphibious landing ship Changbaishan during an escort mission in the Gulf of Aden PhotoXinhuaBEIJING: November 25, 2015. A spokesman for China's foreign ministry has confirmed the country is in talks with government officials from the former French colony of Djibouti to establish a logistics base for its military.

According to foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei, China has deployed over 60 vessels to the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast in 21 escort missions since 2008. As a result, he said China had "encountered real difficulties in replenishing soldiers and resupplying fuel and food, and found it really necessary to have nearby and efficient logistical support".

He added that China wanted to build a base in Djibouti to better serve its military when carrying out international peacekeeping operations, escorting ships in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast, and performing humanitarian rescue operations.
