DOHA, Qatar: January 24, 2016. Qatar Airways will begin four-times weekly A320 flights between Doha and Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, from May 15.

ArmeniaSituated along the Hrazdan River, with a backdrop of the snow-capped Caucasus mountain range, Yerevan is one of the world's oldest continuously-inhabited cities.

The new destination announcement followed comments made earlier in the week by Qatar Group CEO Akbar Al Baker at the Bahrain International Air Show: “Successful airlines must adapt, but must also have very deliberate goals and the focus to reach them. We have taken advantage of our strengths, which includes our geographic position in Doha, which has 80 percent of the world’s population within six flight hours, and we have combined that advantage with a superior product, which includes our route map, our fleet – which is one of the youngest fleet in the world.”

Stressing the importance of competition in an industry that faces increasing challenges against a backdrop of global economic change, he added: “Qatar Airways is a young company but we are growing fast, in fact we have seen a growth of 25 percent this past year. In this region we have a growing demographic looking to travel further and more frequently. At the same time we run an efficient and 24-hour airport that makes travel seamless and convenient for our passengers.

“The truth is, competition in this industry will not go away and it is the customer that will determine the winners and the losers,” he concluded.

Responding to what it says is customer demand, Qatar Airways will increase services to Croatia, Hungary and Azerbaijan. From April and July respectively, frequencies to Zagreb and Budapest will be 10 a week while flights to Baku will be increased to 11 times a week from March 27. The airline will also begin direct flights from Doha to Belgrade from March 16, replace an A320 with a B787 on its double-daily service to Moscow’s Domodedovo airport, and replace an A320 with an A330 to Warsaw from July 01.
