SamskipROTTERDAM: December 13, 2016. Samskip and Austrian Railways' subsidiary Rail Cargo Group are to launch a four times a week intermodal rail link from Curtici, Romania to major Swedish logistics centers.

According to Max Kindler, a business unit manager for Rail Cargo Group Intermodal, the new service will provide shippers with the first intermodal link between Turkey and Scandinavia via Romania and Germany.

The two companies say the new service will allow shippers to transport cargo from Curtici on the western border of Romania via Samskip's hub in Duisburg, Germany to Stockholm in four to five days.

"Until now, shippers wanting to transport shipments between the two regions have had little choice but to use road haulage, running the risk of road congestion, delays and unpredictable delivery times," explained Frank Gielen, Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal Rail Development manager. "The rail connection offers shippers a more reliable alternative, as well as achieving substantially lower [CO2] emissions per unit load," he added.

Samskip says the new route from Curtici now extends its intermodal network in Central and Eastern Europe, connecting Sweden and Denmark to Italy and Turkey.

The company operates pan-European services via shortsea, road, rail and inland waterway as well as across the Baltic States, Russia and Central Asia using owned vessels, containers, trucks and trailers.
