THE HAGUE: March 28, 2017. AkzoNobel and Maersk Line have signed a partnership to reduce carbon emissions by 10 percent for every shipped container.

The companies - who are both customers of, and suppliers to, each other - said the aim of the partnership is to create transparency on sustainable best practices in the supply chain and make sustainability a decision factor in the customer-supplier relationship.

Maersk containers"This sustainability partnership with AkzoNobel is an important step towards a common framework to jointly elevate and promote supply chain transparency and sustainability in our industries," said Annette Stube, head of Sustainability, Maersk Transport and Logistics. "Successful resolution of sustainability issues will rarely occur through the power of one individual company."

As a part of the agreement the two companies said they would also continue to cooperate and explore innovations and new ideas to help improve sustainability and business performance as part of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), a global coalition with the aim of solving some of the sector's biggest challenges.

André Veneman, AkzoNobel's corporate Director of Sustainability added: "This is a pioneering collaboration where two industry leaders have come together to make the world a more sustainable place. By working together with customers, partners and suppliers, we can make life more liveable, healthy and inspiring."

AkzoNobel said it wants to become carbon neutral by 2050 by increasing its renewable energy sourcing from a current level of 40 percent to 100 percent. In addition to Maersk, it is involved in several sustainability partnerships in the Netherlands including sourcing energy from two new wind parks, switching from gas to sustainably generated steam to provide energy for chemicals production, and investigating the launch of a waste-to-chemicals factory.
