DURRENASCH, Switzerland: May 29, 2017. Liquid logistics specialist Bertschi has begun an 18-day movement of 82 ISO tank containers from Korla in Western China to France.

The block train will route via Dostyk in Kazakhstan to Bryansk, Russia; and then on to Minsk, Belarus; Vilnius, Lithuania; Warsaw, Poland; Schwarzheide, Germany and finally Antwerp, Belgium for a total transit of 8,000 kms.

BERTSCHI tanksThe company said the rail choice was "reasonable and time-saving" given Korla is 4,000 kms. from China's seaports - and is a repeat of its first block train on the route two years ago.

Anticipating China's infrastructure investment in its 'One Belt, One Road' policy of linking other Central Asian countries with Europe, Bertschi said it expects to operate many more block tank trains in future.

Earlier this year the privately held Swiss company was awarded a coveted transport safety award for its tanks by material science company Covestro, a former division of Bayer.

Covestro manufactures high-performance polymers and has 30 production sites around the globe, including the Asia-Pacific region. The company said it began a 'Safety Champion Program' to encourage logistics providers to be "self-driven for safety" and promote the sharing of best practices.

This year it recognized Bertschi's innovation for its deep-sea tank containers that are equipped with a collapsible handrail and 100 percent walkway coverage to ensure a safe working environment.

"This prize is a wonderful recognition for the measures we implemented to ensure a safe working environment for all parties involved. Bertschi would like to thank Covestro for this award and will strongly continue to support initiatives for more safety in chemical logistics," said Bertschi Asia-Pacific (Shanghai) general manager William Leigh-Pemberton.

The company said it has been accident-free since making the modification on its 9,000 units and claimed they are setting new safety and efficiency standards for the global transportation of liquid chemical products.
