RailsponsibleUTRECHT, The Netherlands: Six leading railway companies have launched a procurement initiative dubbed 'Railsponsible' in a bid to improve supply chain sustainability throughout the industry.

Alstom Transport, Bombardier Transportation, Deutsche Bahn, Knorr Bremse, Nederlandse Spoorwegen and SNCF will share best practices and processes with the goal of creating greater efficiencies by using and sharing common tools.

The founding members say they want a global railway industry where all suppliers have good ethical, social and environmental business practices.

Railsponsible will begin its first common supplier assessment campaign in March using EcoVadis - a collaborative visibility platform that allows companies to assess the sustainability performance of their global suppliers.

The company combines technology and expertise to deliver simple and reliable "supplier sustainability scorecards", covering 150 purchasing categories, 21 CSR indicators and 120 countries. Customers include Alcatel-Lucent, Coca Cola Enterprises, Heineken, Orange, Johnson & Johnson, Lafarge, Renault-Nissan, Schneider Electric and Verizon.

Railsponsible says participating suppliers in the EcoVadis review can demonstrate to their customers and suppliers a commitment to Sustainability and benefit from knowing one assessment will be valid for multiple clients.

The founding members say anyone in the railway industry supply chain who believes in the vision and mission of the initiative can join it. At a minimum they have to demonstrate their company shares the vision, mission and commitments of the organization; sign up for an EcoVadis subscription at Railsponsible rates; and commit to promoting supplier assessments to 100 suppliers or 60 percent of relevant procurement spending.
