DARIEN, CT/FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: September 05, 2017. Railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) is investing in a four-day rail ferry service between the ports of Mobile, Alabama and Coatzacoalcos, Mexico in a joint venture with Seacor Holdings.

Established in 2001 by CG Railway (CGR), now a Seacor subsidiary, the ferry service uses two vessels with a capacity of 115 railcars each to move 10,000 annual carloads of chemicals, plastics, fructose, refined sugar, steel, pulp and paper.

GR Railway ferry The joint venture says it will immediately upgrade the rail link that is an alternative to trucking services between the southeast U.S. and southeast Mexico.

CGR connects in Mobile with G&W's Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway as well as BNSF, Canadian National, CSX, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern. At Coatzacoalcos it links with Ferrosur, a rail operator serving central and southern Mexico.

"We are committed to improve the rail ferry's on-time performance by leveraging Seacor's expertise in marine operations," said CGR senior vice president Kevin Wild. "Combining reliable service with the cost efficiency of short sea shipping and the 50 percent shorter transit time versus land routes, we create a compelling alternative for customers moving goods between the eastern U.S. and Canada to and from central and southern Mexico."

CGR has long-term agreements to operate purpose-built rail ferry terminals in the ports of Mobile and Coatzacoalcos and a 10,000-square-foot, food-grade truck-to-rail transload facility in Mobile.

G&W chief commercial officer Michael Miller added: "CGR creates a natural extension of our rail services to reach the rapidly growing market in central and southern Mexico."

Headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Seacor is a holding company focused on domestic and international transportation, logistics, and risk management consultancy.

G&W owns or leases 122 freight railroads worldwide that are organized in 10 operating regions with approximately 8,000 employees and 3,000 customers.
