SEAT Logistics centerBARCELONA: January 15, 2018. Car manufacturer SEAT (Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo) is constructing a new automated logistics center to store parts and components at its Martorell plant, 30 kilometers northwest of Barcelona.

With a total capacity for 119,000 boxes and a maximum height of 43.7 meters, the building will be the tallest logistics warehouse in Spain when completed in the last quarter of 2018.

According to SEAT vice president Production Andreas Tostmann "the creation of this wholly automated logistics centre once again demonstrates that SEAT is a benchmark company in every area of Industry 4.0".

Covering a total surface area of 5,700 square meters, the automated facility will process 1,600 containers an hour.

The Martorell factory was opened in 1993 and last year delivered 468,400 vehicles – or one every 67 seconds – for a 14.6 percent increase in volume compared to 2016. Since 2012 the manufacturer has increased sales by 45.9 percent with Germany, Spain, the UK, Mexico and France being its top five markets last year.

Sales in Germany rose 13.4 percent to 102,100, the company's best-ever result in 2017; Spanish sales increased 23.1 percent to reach 95,100 units; the UK imported 56,200 cars – a rise of 18.3 percent; Mexico sales rose 0.7 percent to reach 24,700 units and car sales in France jumped 15.6 percent to total 24,200.

The sales growth resulted in an operating profit of 154 million euros in the first nine months of 2017, an increase of 12.3 percent compared to the same period the previous year.
