Peel Liverpool 2LIVERPOOL: November 06, 2016. Peel Ports has opened Liverpool2, a £400 million terminal that will double the port's container handling capacity from the world's largest box ships to two million TEU a year.

MSC, which has been calling at Liverpool for the past 15 years, has been part of the new terminal trials. The port is linked by road, rail and canal to a catchment of over 35 million people.

"Our investment will help global shippers to transport cargo more efficiently to their end destination with lower costs, congestion and carbon emissions," said Peel Ports CEO Mark Whitworth. The terminal was constructed on 16 hectares reclaimed from the sea.

"Liverpool offers a real competitive advantage with a shorter supply chain and providing an all-water route right to the heart of the UK via the Manchester Ship Canal," he added.

Last month the Panama Canal Authority signed an Memorandum of Understanding with Peel Ports to promote trade routes between Liverpool and the west coast of South America via the Panama Canal.

Liverpool currently has around 8.0 percent of the UK container market.
