Goldhofer 1LA RÉUNION: February 06, 2017. French construction company Vinci is using three heavy-duty vehicles from the German Goldhofer company to move 36 viaduct piers and 1,386 sections as part of a new freeway on the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean.

Each main pier weighs 700 tons and each viaduct support weighs up to 285 tons.

The new €715 million 5.600-meter viaduct, which is expected to be completed in 2018, is being built to bypass a steep coastal road in the north of the island, part of the main link between the seaport of Le Port and the capital Saint Denis. The road is frequently closed for repairs due to rockfalls that have claimed lives.

While the main piers are moved by barge from a nearby concrete plant to the construction site, Goldhofer uses the coast road to carry the viaduct segments 15 kilometers to where they are picked up by a launching gantry and lowered into place.

According to the company its three heavy lift movers will make 1,386 trips along the dangerous coast road over a three-year period.

Founded in 1705, Goldhofer acquired Schopf Maschinenbau in 2013 to expand into civil and military aviation and the mining industry. It remains a market leader for general, heavy-duty and oversized transport for loads between 25 and 10,000 tons.
