BONN: April 11, 2017. Deutsche Post DHL is to expand production of its StreetScooter postal service electric van from 10,000 to 20,000 units in response to its own requirements as well as third-party interest.

Street Scooter productionIn order to meet the rising demand, the company said it would establish a second production site in North Rhine-Westphalia and aims to double its own fleet to 5,000 units by the end of 2017.

At least half of this year's production is slated for municipal authorities, strategic partners and large fleet customers in Germany and the rest of Europe.

Founded in 2009 StreetScooter was a start-up by a consortium of around 80 German automotive companies. It was acquired by DPDHL in December 2014.

"The large demand for the StreetScooter and our own ambitious climate-protection goals have encouraged us to further expand our commitment in the area of electro-mobility and to also make our expertise available to others," said Jürgen Gerdes, DPDHL Board member for Post - eCommerce - Parcel.

Prices start at €32,000 for the basic 'Work Pure' version with a larger version ('Work L') now available with a 1,000 kgs capacity. Next year a third version 'Work XL' is expected to hit the streets of Germany to complement a fleet of mail delivery StreetScooter e-bikes ('Work S') and e-trikes ('Work M').

DPDHL said it plans to be emissions net-zero by 2050.
