QATAR: May 03, 2017. The Ocean Alliance has made its first direct service to Hamad Port, Qatar with the calling of the 10,500 TEU box ship CMA CGM Uruguay.

Hamad Port CGM call About 19 containerships from the 'Alliance, that brings together China Cosco Shipping, Evergreen Line, CMA CGM, OOCL and APL in a vessel and slot-sharing agreement, are expected to arrive at Hamad Port in the next few months.

Port management company Mwani Qatar said the the new service will enhance its transshipment capabilities and help transform Qatar into a regional trading hub and make it less dependent on fossil fuel revenue.

"We are pleased to announce the launch of the new direct service of Ocean Alliance, the world's largest container shipping alliance," said Mwani Qatar CEO Captain Abdulla Al Khanji. "[It] will undoubtedly serve the national economy and contribute to achieve the goals set by our wise leadership to promote Hamad Port and transform Qatar into a regional trading hub."

The new call comes less than three months after the start of the first direct service between Hamad Port and Shanghai with MSC's New Falcon Service that reduces transit times from 30 to 14 days.

The 14,000 TEUs containership MSC Esthi was the first and largest box vessel to visit Hamad Port when it officially opened on December 01, 2016.

Mwani Qatar owns and manages three main commercial ports in Qatar: Doha Port, Al-Ruwais Port and Hamad Port - with a current capacity for two million TEU.
