ATLANTA: May 27, 2017. UPS and SF Holding, owner of SF Express, are establishing a joint venture to provide international delivery services from China to the U.S.

The two companies said a combination of SF's 13,000 service points in China with UPS's network covering 220 countries, would offer customers more coverage, routing, capacity and service options.

"Coupled with a rapidly growing and internet-savvy consumer base, it's imperative that SF and UPS collaborate to revolutionize the logistics sector."

The joint venture will initially focus on China-US followed by other routes worldwide.

In related development, UPS live-sciences subsidiary Marken has launched a new "hybrid" service that utilizes reduces its reliance on commercial passenger aircraft for both outbound and reverse logistics.

For one client, Marken collects shipments of biologic material from sites in Russia, consolidates them in Moscow, and then uses UPS's airline network for final delivery in Europe via its hub in Cologne.

Marken's reverse logistics service is now being used for clinical trials that combine a commercial airline service for outbound shipments and UPS for the return of reusable products.

"We want customers to think of Marken as the clinical subsidiary of UPS," said CEO Wes Wheeler. "We intend to be the supply chain service provider of choice for the clinical trials community, and to expand our broad range of services supporting the movement of clinical drug product, clinical drug substance, medical devices, biologic samples and other regulated materials. With UPS behind us, we are now able to expand our services to include hybrid and integrator services as well," he added.

The company said similar hybrid solutions are being designed for customers in Mexico, the UK and continental Europe.
