Fuel a more sustainable future

FedEx ATR 72-600FTOULOUSE, November 08, 2017. FedEx Express has signed a contract with ATR to purchase 30 ATR 72-600F freighters plus 20 options. The price was not disclosed although a passenger version lists for a reported US$26.8 million.

Delivery of the first aircraft will be in 2020 followed by six units a year to 2025.

The new factory-configured ATR freighter, with a reinforced floor and bulk capacity of 2,630 cubic feet, will incorporate a large forward cargo door and rear upper-hinged door, accommodate seven LD3 containers, five 88" x 108" or nine 88" x 62" inch pallets.

President and CEO of FedEx Express David Cunningham commented: "ATR aircraft have been successfully operating in FedEx service for many years. We worked with ATR to develop this new aircraft, which includes special features to help us grow our business, especially in the airfreight market where shipments are larger and heavier."

Currently FedEx's 300-plus feeder aircraft do not carry containers or palletized freight so the new configuration will help the company better serve customers in the airfreight market where palletized shipments are the norm, Cunningham added.

"The ATR 72-600F is the only new large regional aircraft available on the market for freighter operations. We are convinced that, with its use by FedEx Express, it will become the new benchmark for regional air cargo operations," said ATR CEO Christian Scherer.
