TRIESTE: May 17, 2018. The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has introduced a weekly intermodal rail service from the Port of Trieste to Werndorf, Austria to link with its container sailings between Asia and Europe.

MSC TRIESTEThe new ‘MSC Graz-Trieste Runner’ shuttle, operated in conjunction with Cargo Center Graz, is the first direct connection between Trieste and Werndorf and will be used to deliver containers to a Lidl distribution centre near Graz.

“It’s a win-win operation for MSC and Lidl. We are enhancing our supply chain with a sophisticated new port of entry, as well as supporting an innovative intermodal product,” said Lidl managing director for international procurement Christian Stangl.

“Simultaneously, Lidl is contributing to MSC’s sustainable growth ambitions in this area. By supporting the MSC Graz-Trieste Runner, we are also certain to provide additional value to the Austrian export market via Trieste to worldwide destinations,” he added.

MSC said its new five-hour train shuttle from the Trieste Marine Terminal to Austria will be coordinated with the port calls of other ocean carriers at Trieste to enable on-carriage to destinations in central and northern Europe as well as points in Greece, Turkey and other Eastern Mediterranean countries.

Privately-held Lidl opened its first store in Frankfurt in 1973 and now operates 10,000 in 28 countries.
